Technology Transfer and Commercialization

Technology transfer is the process by which a new invention and/or associated innovations originating from research endeavours are turned into product(s) for commercialization.

Article 7 (“Objectives”) of the TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) Agreement states that the IPR protection and enforcement should contribute to technology transfer/dissemination for mutual benefits of the technology producers and users in a manner that is conducive to social and economic welfare.

Typically, technology transfer and commercialization can be achieved by licensing the technology to industrial partner, joint R&D collaborations, assignment of the intellectual property rights, and/or through spin-outs.

Technology transfer is a complex and multifaceted process involving the research and discovery to be assessed, protected through IPRs, marketed through appropriate channel(s), connected to appropriate partner(s)/collaborator(s), licenses and deals being negotiated leading up toproduct commercialization and revenue generation.
